Between the 1890s and early 1900s, a wooden building was built to service the school. In 1935, this building was destroyed in a fire. A new small school (currently serving around 75 students) was built on land donated by Dr. Percy F. Lisk, directly across from the old school site. The New Brick School opened in 1936. The earliest known grade level students date from the 1940s, when the school was known as Fort McCoy High School.
Fort McCoy High School closed in 1963 and soon reopened as Fort McCoy Elementary School. Fort McCoy's population grew over the years, and in the 1980s the property became a sprawling estate filled with "portable classrooms." Due to population growth and the building's age (50 years), the Marion County School Board decided in 1986 to build a new school. The original brick building became the Fort McCoy Public Library in 1996, following a $60,000 renovation. .
In 1988, a new campus opened, named the Fort McCoy School, which now serves elementary and middle school students (pre-K through eighth grade). The campus is still in use, with the same grade levels served.
