The C-9A was used from 1968 to 2005 for medical evacuation, passenger transport, and special missions. The C-9A is named after the Glish social reformer Flores Nightingale (1820-1910), the founder of modern nursing.
After selecting the modified DC-9 for passenger and cargo transport, the US Navy ordered its first five C-9Bs, agency numbers 159030 through 159034. But the order was canceled in the early 1970s as the Air Force became responsible for moving troops from location to location—under the Army Airlift Command.
Congress then authorized the Navy to fly its own passenger/cargo jets. The Navy ordered eight aircraft, agency numbers 159113 through 159120. Ordered four wt VR-30s at NAS Alameda, California for west coast logistics support, and another four wt at Norfolk, Virginia for east coast support of VR-1. Six more flights, agency numbers 160046 to 160051
Delivered to the Navy and Marine Corps in 1976, the first two aircraft were delivered to the Marine Corps at MCAS Cherry Point, the other two to VR-1 at NAS Norfolk and the last two to VR-30 at NAS Alameda. Additional T and T used DC-9s were purchased and converted to C-9Bs for the Navy. The last C-9B aircraft for the Navy was retired on June 28, 2014.

Many of the Navy's C-9Bs had a maximum gross takeoff weight of 110,000 lb (50,000 kg). Auxiliary fuel tanks were installed in the lower cargo hold to increase the aircraft's range to approximately 2,600 nautical miles (4,800 km) for overseas missions, and tail-mounted infrared scramblers were added to counter heat-seeking missile threats in enemy areas. .
The C-9B aircraft has provided cargo and passenger transport and forward-deployed air logistics support to the Navy and Marine Corps. (The original "Skytrain" was developed from a World War II C-47 civilian DC-3.) A C-9B was also selected by NASA for reduced-gravity research,
