This is undoubtedly the recorder's finest moment in the musical canon. My son is currently learning to play the recorder at school, and as much as I enjoy hearing "Good King Wenceslas" played to a mournful rhythm by nervous children, I wish the music teacher would at least once throw a chorus into the mix and would play "Your move." Least
Despite barely cracking the US Top 40, I can assure you rock radio stations were playing this song in the seventies. Sometimes, as a gift, they even played it for the second part, "All Good People". I had a teacher play the radio in class (it was a drawing class and again a super useful skill that has served me so well in life that I once needed to draw a straight pencil line on my wall using a level), and never failed with producing a small amount of joy when the second silence after this song led to "All Good People" and not, say, "Bad Case of Loving You."
On the flip side is "Clap" (I don't know what happened to "The"), Steve Howe's rodeo-clown hiatus on their terrible third album. It's a perfect decompression moment on a very heavy album and a lovely bookend to the more serious 'Mood for a Day'. Years later Jon Anderson would return to the "Your Move" style for the wonderful "Wonderous Stories". Oh, and in case you missed it, "Your Move" references two John Lennon songs: "Instant Karma" and "Give Peace A Chance."
