Attention everyone... THIS GENRE IS COMBINED!!!! What do you get when you mix 1 part FPS and 1 part RTS? FPRTSS of course! Ever since I played 1st RTS all those years ago, I dreamed of commanding a single unit and becoming not just a commander, but a lone hero on the battlefield. Now we at Out of Ammo get that chance!

The controls here are both satisfying and frustrating. 2 motion controllers are required, when you are allowed to move, in first person mode, it's just teleportation and clicking 90 degrees "X" on each controller will take you to that hand. I can't help but mourn these "comfortable" options because they do the exact opposite for me, making games frustrating and unplayable. In RTS mode, you have a fixed view of the battlefield and can then direct and build units by highlighting and selecting options from a pop-up wheel. Depending on your angle and perspective, selecting units and wheel options can sometimes be a chore, especially if those objects are directly below you.

Gunplay is much more satisfying with an emphasis on realism that both harms and helps the game. Any firearms you own must be reloaded, which means removing the old cartridge, removing the next case, clip, or bullet from your belt and putting it back in the gun. I appreciated this mechanic, but there are a few issues with the steering, which I'll address later.

Each level offers its own unique elements, but ultimately plays the same way. fending off endless waves of enemies. Set up some buildings, assign a class to your troops and send them on their way. It's all very simple, but it sure will be fun when it works. You can have any soldier you want at any time and turn it into an FPS and help dispatch your enemies a bit more effectively than the AI soldiers. Again, when it works, it's fun. As a commander, you are given a choice of targeted attacks, missile attacks, and targeted sniper attacks, which should be used when the situation gets a little tense.

The other mode is first-person only and puts you in 1 of 3 situations where you have to race against the clock and survive. I thought this mode was more desirable than the usual RTS section, but a lot of technical issues keep it from being much fun. The first stage is a spy mission that throws a bunch of enemies from all directions, and you have to take them out with a single-shot rifle, reloading it every time you shoot. The second is a sniper mission with you in the clock tower, protecting a nearby accident site from incoming enemies. Finally, you are a victim of an accident in a small area and you have to arm yourself with a gun and kill the attacking enemies while looking for ammunition. Like the rest of the game, this mode is fun... when it works.

It's a minecraft look to us and for the most part I like the visual style here. From an RTS point of view, the levels have a cartoony design and I thought they looked good. The lighting effects look good, and while nothing is crazy detailed, I didn't mind here. When soldiers and objects are far away, they can look like a grainy mess, and the only real way to distinguish enemies from the environment is the color difference between the 2. The audio is in stereoscopic surround sound, so the FPS mode is the only tip for you. if the next man tries to pick you up, his gunshots will be heard behind you. The same audio cues are present in RTS mode, but less important as you will see a much larger playing field.

Okay, now to the problems. In an RTS mode, you're stationary, which is fine, except that things can appear below you and the action can take place there, too. Trying to hold something is made a little easier thanks to the slightly different viewing angle of awkward body position or turning 90 degrees in the game and then physically returning to the thing you want to touch. The reload mechanism here involves removing the old ammo and grabbing your waist (ish) for a new clip. The sweet spot for ammo spawning in your waist and arms is either too small or a bit random to drive the player crazy. Maybe half the time I managed to get ammo to the first hold, it took me 2 or 3 tries for it to show up. If things are messed up, that's just unacceptable.

Sniping is still the most satisfying part of this game for me, but that's not a compliment. A sniper rifle is 1 shot, so after you miss, you have to pull the chamber handle back, eject the bullet, reach down, (maybe) catch the bullet, chamber it, and chamber it again. Here you can fire again... and probably miss. You'll need to tweak your motion controller a bit to get your enemy in the gun's crosshairs, physically holding your hand in front of your face and aiming. Whether it's an in-game mechanic, motion control perfection, or my own shaky hands, shooting is an achievement in itself. Every time I sniped someone it was very satisfying and rewarding but every time I missed I had to reload, line up my shot and miss again and honestly it wasn't worth it. Oh, and the gun is 1 more shot, which is absolutely ridiculous in an FPS mission, especially since the gunfire doesn't take out the enemy.

In the end, I think Out of Ammo works more than it doesn't, but when combined with the repetitive RTS sections, 3 special missions that are more frustrating than fun, and overall basic gameplay, it could easily make me sick of it. and continue. The game has 2 - 4 player co-op which is great, but it doesn't solve any of the issues I mentioned, but you can see who gets tired of playing and quits first. On paper, Out of Ammo sounds like something I've been waiting for years, and now that it's out, I'm still waiting.

What would I pay? Haha, that's a bit tricky. I had really good times here, but it gets boring quickly. $10 seems a bit more appropriate here, and with any luck future patches will ease the issues I mentioned for more consistent and enjoyable gameplay.
